Chronic constipation

Causes of chronic constipation are manifold. In most cases extensive investigations are necessary to evaluate its cause(s). I cannot not discuss this here and have to refer to the appropriate literature. Surgery only plays a very small role in the treatment of constipation and should be reserved for a highly selected group of patients. Outlet obstruction and segmental slow transit constipation are two symptom complexes, where surgery could be helpful.
